As the long hot summer break draws to a close, the Blues look forward to the return of the Premier League. The first match of the season will be just down the road at Fulham, and kicks off at 8pm on Monday 24th August. Before then, there are a small handful of non-televised friendlies, which you can watch via the Chelsea website or app (if you’re a CFC+ member).
Capital city bragging rights are up for grabs as we move into September with a visit to the Emirates before taking on newly promoted Hull City at the Bridge and the short trip across West London to face Brentford.

Fulham v Chelsea

This fixture being on Monday night has caused a lot of trouble given both sides are at home in the EFL Cup in the same week and are “paired” with each other for fixture purposes (so do not normally play at home on the same day). Thankfully scheduling is not our concern and instead we can simply enjoy an extended football “weekend”. This west London derby is a great way to round off the opening round of the new PL season.
Both teams have new managers, with Xabi Alonso taking charge of the visitors for the first time in competitive action and Alvaro Arbeloa doing likewise for the hosts. Who will win this battle of the former Liverpool and Real Madrid players, two men who know each other very well?
Chelsea v Luton

Chelsea host third-tier Luton in the second round of the EFL Cup, entering the competition at this early stage along with the 10 other top flight clubs not involved in European football this season. Finding a date for this game is proving tricky, but whenever it does take place, the hosts should record a straightforward win.
They have the squad depth to rotate for this one and still outclass the Hatters, especially with their visitors sure to be focusing very much on promotion from League 1, having finished seventh last term. Former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere will be in the away dugout and can be assured of a lively welcome at the Bridge.
Chelsea v Brighton & Hove Albion

Xabi Alonso’s home debut as Chelsea boss sees his troops face a tough test against a Brighton side that finished a point and two places above them last term. That earnt the Seagulls a European spot and thus a break from midweek action in the Carabao Cup prior to this. With the Blues set for their third game in a week, could tiredness be a factor even at this stage of the season?
On home soil Alonso’s men should prove too good but recent games between these two have seen the Seagulls dominate. They have won the last four by an aggregate of 11-2, despite Chelsea poaching many of their players and staff! This one should be a cracker.
Arsenal v Chelsea

If the Blues are to mount any sort of serious title challenge this term a game like this is the perfect opportunity to show that they mean business. Before a ball was kicked the Gunners were clear favourites for the PL title, with Chelsea fourth in the betting (at 8/1 compared to 13/10 for Arsenal). A draw would be a decent result for Xabi Alonso’s men but if they can nick a win it would be a real statement of intent.
Last term the corresponding fixture ended 2-1 to the Gunners, while they also won both legs of the teams’ EFL Cup semi. At the Bridge it ended 1-1 but Chelsea have beaten Arsenal just once in the last 16 attempts and that victory was 12 games ago, in 2021. That shows the size of the task the Blues face.
Brentford v Chelsea

After their game away at Arsenal, the Blues face another PL London derby on the road, although thankfully their challenge is a little easier here. Xabi Alonso takes his team to the Gtech Community Stadium to face the Bees, although it should be noted that Brentford finished a point and a place above Chelsea last term.
Few pundits will be expecting a repeat of that this time around but the hosts should not be written off too readily. They have defied expectations for a long time now and do so much right off the pitch – something Chelsea could certainly learn from. While the Blues are unbeaten in five matches against their opponents here, the last four meetings between the London rivals at Brentford have all ended in draws.
